Shop entry doors

The original shop entry doors to Arkwright & Carpenter had been removed c1980 & replaced (with a by 2024 rotting) glazed takeaway shop door. As it is the only corner door in Oatlands, and was well recorded in photographic evidence from c 1890, the decision was made to remake the doors & original night shutters. By c 1970 the doors had lost the bolection mouldings to the lower panels (see images). These were remade by hand plane profile copied from elsewhere on the building.

The original fanlight was made operable on a pulley & recycled 19th hardware & boxlock reconditioned.
Work carried out in Tasmanian Huon pine, which is impervious to weathering, thence oak grained (as evidenced to original frame), in hand made oil paint. Drab flat oil to interior.

[The use of night shutters – solid removable panels – was standard on 19th century commercial buildings, to protect the glazing, for added security & no doubt, an extra bill board. Two examples were found on glazed doors, and only one survivor protecting windows were found in Tasmania. From these was copied detailing & hardware]
